KIMBERLY VAN DER BEEK SPEAKS FOR BREECH

Celebrity mother advocating for natural delivery of breech babies

October 17, 2012, Washington DC – Kimberly Van Der Beek, People Magazine Celebrity blogger, and wife of James Van Der Beek of Dawson’s Creek and Don’t Trust the B—- fame, will be participating in a consumer’s panel at the Heads Up! International Breech Conference in Washington DC, November 9 – 11, 2012.

In March 2012 Ms. Van Der Beek gave birth to her second baby, Joshua, at home in the care of an OB. Joshua presented breech and he was born without complications, safely into his father’s arms. Ms. Van Der Beek’s experience as a mother who has had the opportunity to naturally deliver a breech baby will provide a fresh perspective on the consumer’s panel.

In recent years studies have proven natural breech delivery in full term babies to be as safe as surgical birth in situations where attendants are skilled. In response to increasing demand from women for better options in breech birth, the Heads Up! International Breech Conference series brings together a community of experts and consumers from around the world working toward the restoration of breech delivery skills to maternity care providers.

Over the last ten years, the practice of vaginal breech birth was nearly eliminated from obstetrical practice and surgical birth was the only option offered to women carrying breech babies. Consumer pressure and lack of evidence against normal delivery of breech babies along with known surgical risks has resulted in a turn in obstetrical thinking, and a requirement for the training in vaginal breech delivery that has been largely neglected for the last decade.

“This lack of choice, especially where the clinical evidence does not show clear benefit to women or their babies in having a surgical rather than vaginal breech birth, is unacceptable to many women,” says Robin Guy, conference organizer and mother of a breech baby. “It was distress about the situation at the grassroots level that resulted in the creation of the CBB. The Washington chapter was founded by a woman who attended our 2009 Breech Conference in Ottawa, Canada, and wanted to see this amazing event brought here to benefit women in her area.”

About the Conference: The CBB is thrilled to announce a high profile line-up of speakers at the Heads Up! International Breech Birth Conference including world-acclaimed obstetricians, midwives, researchers and others who have assisted women and tirelessly defended their right to vaginal breech delivery. Invited experts hail from the United States, Canada, Germany, Norway, Australia, Ecuador, and the United Kingdom. Special guests include the legendary American midwife Ina May Gaskin, author of Spiritual Midwifery and Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth, and Ibu Robin Lim, winner of the CNN Hero of the Year Award.

Local speakers include: Dr. Jean Gilles Tchabo, an OBGYN practicing in Arlington, Tammi McKinley, an independent midwife with North Virginia Midwifery, and JoseLo Gutierrez of City Acupuncture Circle, offering insight into breech birth in the DC area.

Fees are on a sliding scale, making this conference exceptionally affordable and accessible.

Registration is now online at www.conference.breechbirth.ca.
